The Future of Psychology

What Do Psychologists Do?

Psychologists provide their clients with a safe and supportive environment to discuss experiences that are negatively impacting their life. Over the course of these discussions, the psychologist determines the emotional and mental health of their client and uses a variety of testing methods to identify negative thought patterns and emotional triggers. Once this has all been done, psychologists then use these insights as a guide for creating strategies and frameworks that will lead to positive changes in the lives of their clients.

Psychology in Australia

There are 23,500 psychologists currently working in Australia, most whom are employed in the education and training, healthcare and social assistance sectors. Psychologists work with everyone from adults and children to families, couples and even organisations. The average pay in Australia is $78,000 per annum, and most jobs are found in Victoria (33.3%), Queensland (21%) and New South Wales (19.6%).

Pathways into Psychology

The field of psychology encompasses a broad spectrum of roles including counsellors, support workers, and registered psychologists. Taking the right pathway into your career in psychology will depend on the role you’d like to play.

Counselling, for example, is currently not regulated in Australia, which means you can get started with just a certificate or diploma under your belt; although the more training you have, the more likely you are to thrive in this difficult role. Similarly, intake and support workers often require only a basic understanding of psychology; however, if you want to work with the at-risk population, there can be a range of legal requirements specific to your location and role.

To become a registered psychologist, you must meet strict guidelines set out by the Psychology Board of Australia, which starts with completing a Bachelor of Psychology Degree. From here you essentially have three options; complete your Masters or Doctorate in Psychology, spending two years interning under the guidance of a registered psychologist or complete a Diploma of Psychology. The final step involves passing the National Psychology Exam.

Psychology Courses in Australia

Regardless of whether you’re looking to study psychology in Melbourne, learn the basics of counselling in Sydney, or take forensic psychology courses online, you’ll find a broad range of training options advertised through right here.

Certificate

Those looking for a well-rounded introduction to the field of psychology should consider Certificate courses, as they include everything from counselling courses and workshops in human behaviour to child psychology. Most certificates can be completed in 12-18 months; many of which are eligible for financial assistance and some are even internationally accredited courses. This level of qualification in psychology is often used to get a grasp on what it has to offer and help determine whether it’s the career path for you. A Certificate in Psychology and Counselling for instance, can give you insights into behaviour as well as provide you with knowledge of theories and practices often seen in psychology.

Diploma

Diploma level programs can provide an ideal route into a successful career as a support worker or counsellor as they include a comprehensive look at the theory behind human behaviour, as well as a dedicated work placement. Diplomas are often focussed more on counselling, as a Bachelor degree or higher is needed to become a psychologist. If you’re keen to get started and want to begin changing people’s lives for the better; a Diploma of Counselling is a perfect fit for you. Practical experience and theory studies are all covered and can help you develop the skills needed to become a adviser or family/ youth support worker.

Bachelor Degree

Bachelor courses are typically very popular in psychology,  as they tend to go into more intricate detail regarding the theory, practice and core concepts of psychology, making them an ideal first step towards a career as a professional psychologist. Bachelor courses, such as a Bachelor of Behavioural Studies often let you focus your studies on an area of interest as well, such as criminology, human resource management or indigenous studies.

The Future of Psychology

The study of human behaviour will always be one of the most important jobs in our society; after all, finding ways to relate to each other in a positive and productive manner is central to our future endeavours globally.

According to Job Outlook, job prospects in Australia’s psychology sector continue to look bright, with up to 38,000 additional psychologist positions expected over the next five years.

Learning how to become a psychologist will open a wealth of opportunities outside of the industry as well, because fields such as marketing, sales and human resources are increasingly willing to invest in staff with specialised knowledge of human behaviour.

Think you’re ready to delve into the complex world of the human mind? If so, there’s no better time to start than now. So, don’t just sit there, check out our wide selection of psychology courses, find your niche, and get started today!
